CHAPTER 5
Devon wasnât sure what he had said to upset Zion so much, but he knew he had. He could feel the sadness and despair coming from the dragon. He stood there staring at Zionâs back as the colors changed across the sky beyond him. From beautiful pinks and oranges, to violets and deep purples. The light outside continued to fade, the color changing to a dark, rich purple before they began to darken to black with only a small strip of golden light across the horizon.
Devon walked closer to Zion, stopping behind him. He reached out a shaking hand toward Zionâs shoulder but stopped just before he made contact. His hand froze in midair, and he slowly dropped his arm back to his side. âWhat did I do wrong, Zion?â Devon asked in a sad whisper.
Zion took a deep breath and let it out slowly, then turned to face his mate. âYou have done nothing wrong, Devon. I just feel lost, and I donât know what to do.â
âIs there something I can do to help you?â Devon asked, and Zion gave him a surprised look. âWhy do you look so surprised? You helped me, I should help you. You rescued me from Mick, and you brought me home.â
âYou donât owe me anything, Devon,â Zion said in a tight voice. He moved away from Devon and crossed the room as he headed for the door. Zion grabbed the handle and stopped. âPlease stay here in my chamber. I donât know how safe it will be for you to walk around my lands. Only a few trusted people know of your return. We need to keep you safe until we figure out what to do. And stay away from the windows. I donât want anyone looking up and seeing you here,â Zion explained, his back still to Devon.
âAnd where are you going?â Devon asked nervously.
âI need to go meet with the Kings. We need to figure out what to do. Iâll be back as soon as I can. I will instruct Grinold to bring a tray of food up when the others sit for dinner so they will think it is for me.â
âHow will you get out unnoticed then? Wonât they expect you for dinner?â
âGrin will tell them I donât feel well and bring the food up to me, to check on me. Iâll sneak down the back passage to the gardens. No one will see me. Please only open the door for Grin.â And with those last words Zion opened the door slightly and slipped out. He closed the door behind him with a quiet snick.
Devon felt a great loss as soon as Zion was gone. He ran to the door and grabbed the handle, wanting to throw the door open and run after Zion. But he froze before he opened it. He dropped his hand from the handle and sighed. He couldnât go out there. Zion was right, he wasnât safe going out there and possibly being found. Something was very wrong here.
